Now I know this is a travel blog, but here me out, not everyone lives in Michigan like I do. Michigan is a perfect state to visit to kick off the winter season. You could go to a different state and still get winter, but Michigan is a rare state because it has two peninsulas. That means that it is almost completely surrounded by lakes. Because of the Great Lakes, Michigan gets the Lake Effect which produces a lot of snow. Perfect for outdoor Winter activities.
The Upper Peninsula has a crazy winter every single year. The top snowfall recorded in the U.P. during 2017-2018 was 331 inches in Calumet. So the U.P. is a great place to visit if you love 20 degree weather. The tree’s and snow are beautiful up there not to mention the waterfalls, it also makes for great snowmobiling trips!

Michigan also has a lot of ski resorts. The resorts aren’t just for skiing, depending on which one you are looking at, they could also include snowboarding and snow tubing. If you want to go to one farther north in the Lower Peninsula, there is Boyne Ski Resorts in Boyne Falls. The fancy ones are usually farther north. Although there is Apple Mountain in Freeland, which is located toward the middle of the mitten near where the thumb and fingers meet. When you hear about these mountains in Michigan for winter activities, to be honest they are more like big hills. Don’t expect mountains like the ones in California or the Carolinas. The Porcupine Mountains are the biggest it’s gonna get in Michigan. (See picture below)

My favorite winter activity isn’t that far away from my home. I go to Frankenmuth every year to get me into that holiday spirit. Frankenmuth is a city that is based on the old Germany. The architecture, the language, the stores theme, everything is based on old Germany. They have cheese stores, sausage stores, toy stores, taffy stores, and the Bavarian Inn which seems to have everything. They also have horse carriage rides year round. This is just a great place to visit no matter the season, but it’s extra special in the winter because of Bronner’s. Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland is the largest Christmas store in the world and is the highlight of Frankenmuth in my opinion.
This is a picture of me, a long time ago, with my cousin and his families German exchange student Kaspar. They were visiting my family and we thought it would be really cool to take him to Frankenmuth while he was in Michigan. He said that it is exactly what Germany used to be like but nothing at all what it is like in a city of Germany now. He loved it.

What is your favorite winter getaway?
